On September 6, 2024, the solutions and the methodologies under development of SUN XR project related to pilot 3 have been shared with clinicians/therapists from our partners EPFL, particularly focusing on three pilot scenarios aimed at enhancing patient care.
Concerning the scenario one, dealing with bedridden patients, the sun XR platform allows them to interact with friends and family remotely creating a sense of physical presence features like thermal feedback and realistic avatars designed to improve patient immersion and motivation.
As regards to scenario 2, related to patients affected by stroke, the use of electromyography to detect residual muscle activity facilitates communication for patients with severe conditions such as spinal cord injuries or post stroke aphasia.
For scenario 3, concerning apathy, impatience which currently lacks effective therapeutic solutions may be addressed through a combination of non-invasive brain stimulation and virtual reality VR. Preliminary research suggests potential benefits from these technologies and their combined use is seen as feasible. Therapists must be cautious in engaging with these patients to ensure proper information and motivation are provided.
Clinicians have not identified any limitations to these technologies.
